Don't Look Any Further

When did this happen?! I can’t believe it…say it AINT so…write this day down in the calendar, I feel old. Here’s how it happened.

I was minding my own business talking to my friend as we waited in line to order a boost of energy at the local Jamba Juice. The associates behind the counter, hereafter referred to as youngins, were debating about the original song that was being sampled in the TLC remix of “Unpretty” that was blaring in the background. The first one proclaimed…that was P.Diddy, another one said no it was Black Eyed Peas…then my mind started to trail off. I had flashbacks of my father telling me that the “new” music I loved and would eagerly share with him during our music marathons was not new at all…I’d here things like “Girl…that’s Maceo Parker, James Brown’s main man” or “Oh, that aint nothing but a sample of the O’Jays” or my favorite response “Baby girl that’s:

I could go on 4eva! But let’s get back to the story.

I must have channeled my father’s spirit because before I knew it I shouted “the original rap sample was by Erik B and Rakim, “Paid In Full” but the original song was in fact Dennis Edwards “Don’t Look Any Further.” Only one of them knew what I was talking about and immediately began to sing the original song in time with the TLC remix. We had a moment. He smiled and thanked me. It was going to bug him for the rest of the day. Yep, those youngins don’t know what they are missing…cause I can tell you about some good music…
