Afrohemian Moment #1

So I went to get my haircut today...since I'm rocking the natural I just keep it simple and go to a barbershop. I was just talking with friend a few days ago about how the barbershop/hair salon continues to serve as a hub for the African American community. I'm usually one of the only women in the spot when I go and I hear all sorts of interesting anecdotes about sports, love and life from brothas ranging in age from 8 to 80!

Anyway, I had a brain freeze and forgot that the shop is closed on Mondays. Since my fridge has been empty for (dare I say) 2 weeks now I decided to "make some groceries" at the Vons next door. Did I mention I was in the hood? Anyway...I was strolling through the store and singing along to the music played overhead. Now anyone who has been in any store with me knows that singing and dancing along to music played in the store are like involuntary acts for me and I don't even realize I'm doing it sometimes! It's quite amusing actually. Usually this particular Vons plays a lot of soulful tunes...Smokey, Stevie, Anita and so on. It was in this Vons that I learned Smokey Robinson has his own line of soul food..."The Soul is in the Bowl." Who knew! http://www.smokeyrobinsonfoods.com/

Well today, I actually heard one of my favorite tunes from Queen..."I Want to Break Free." As I sang along with Freddie, I noticed that there was a gentleman who was staring at me as if I had 4 eyes and 2 noses. I looked around to make sure there were no aliens or otherwise totally out of place entities. I managed to ask him "Is something wrong sir, are you okay?" To which he replied, "Sorry to stare sis, I just thought it's strange that you seem to know EVERY single word to this song." I just chuckled and told him that I love all kinds of music. As we stood at the deli counter waiting our turn we talked about the song. He wondered who the artist was. I said Queen. He said, don't know em. I said...Another One Bites the Dust. He smiled and said, that's them? I smiled and said, yep! We ended up having a pleasant 2 minute conversation about his need to branch out more and try new things.

Oh that's so funny! You have such a wonderful eclectic ear for music! That is why I think you'll know every new tune I hear on the radio, from Lucy Pearl to Garth Brooks, and that's one of the reason's I love Raine so much.
